Monckton holds the title of 3rd Viscount Monckton of Brenchley, but does not sit in the UK House of Lords and has been reprimanded for claiming so. He has a background in journalism and political advice, though often speaks on climate science as well as the economic and political policies surrounding climate change. He regularly appears at the Heartland Institute’s annual International Conference on Climate Change (dubbed by DeSmogBlog “Denial-a-Palooza”) and funded the distribution in schools of the highly discreditedfilm, the Great Global Warming Swindle.
In 2012, Monkton was banned for life from attending UN climate talks, after he took Burma’s seat at the Doha UN climate talks without permission. The year before, he parachuted into the UN talks in Durban and, in 2009, he infamously compared climate change activists to Hitler Youth. He’s also joked about winning the Nobel Peace Prize.
Whether such stunts show up ‘warmists’as ridiculous, or just himself, will depend on your point of view. In autumn 2010, a coalition of leading climate scientists filed a 48-page document to the US Congress refuting a previous letter from Monkton as “very misleading”, “profoundly wrong” and “simply false”. Professor John Abraham has also extensively refuted many of Monkton’s claims.
