Claudia Salerno is perhaps best known for her stunt at the Copenhagen climate talks, where she lifted a bloodied hand to the UN and Danish hosts. “Do you think a sovereign country has to actually cut its hand and draw blood?” she asked the Danish hosts and U.N. officials.

Venezuela has shown a clear commitment towards civil society at the COPs. In the negotiating sessions she is known for taking a stance which is modelled after her late president Hugo Chavez, one that is more focused on defending national sovereignty than on climate change. Staunch allies include Bolivia, Nicaragua and Cuba, but also those countries who cannot overtly speak out against the U.S.
